Children's Museum visits Kiwanis

Lisa Townsend, Vice President, Marketing and External Relations of the Children’s Museum spoke to the Greenfield Kiwanis about upcoming exhibits, the community involvement of the museum and the museum’s impact on Central Indiana.

The Mr. Potato Head® Exhibit opens January 28, CSI: Flight Adventures opens February 25, Lego® Travel Adventures opens March 10, and a Hot Wheels® opens in May. Most exhibits are accompanied by age specific programs such as Saturday Science programs for ages 6 and up or Flight Adventures for ages 4 and up.

The Children’s Museum returns to the local community through numerous local projects including the neighborhood near the museum. The museum purchased the former Winona Hospital complex of 4 acres adjacent to the museum and in partnership with the city is cleaning up the abandoned buildings. As part of their commitment over $2 million has been spent on neighborhood revitalization with 28 homes built or rehabilitated, 40 abandoned properties have been demolished and 75 homes repaired since 2004.

In 2010 total attendance was 1.16 million with 74,482 school visits sponsored by the museum. Over $73 million was inject into Central Indiana’s economy including $36 million spent by out of town visitors. The museum is located at 3000 North meridian Street in Indianapolis and is open daily March through Labor Day and is closed Mondays Labor through February. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Shares and Kiwanis Aktion CLubs

Jodi Hill of Shares, Inc. spoke to Greenfield Kiwanis about the programs Shares offers to their developmentally disabled clients in their three county service area. Shares serves 150 clients in Hancock County, 120 in Shelby County and 50 in Rush County. The goal of the pre-vocational skill training is to allow the clients to function in the community while earning a wage. In addition to the vocational services, Shares provides life skills in cooking, laundry, housekeeping, reading and mathematics.

Don Collins, the District Administrator of Kiwanis Aktion Clubs spoke following Ms. Hill. Aktion Clubs provide service leadership for adults living with disabilities. An Aktion Club is sponsored by a Kiwanis club but can also be sponsored by a group of clubs or a division. There are Aktion Clubs in Shelbyville and Noblesville. In all there are 24 Aktion Clubs in Indiana.

Aktion club members attend meetings to learn about community issues, plan service and fundraising projects, and enjoy fellowship with others. Club members perform community service such as park beautification, food drives, and nursing home visitations. Members make visits to zoos, museums, and sporting events to share time with one another.

Mr. Collins summed up the evening by saying that in his work with Aktion Club members he has discovered that the member’s abilities exceed their disabilities.

Indiana State Library

Rachel Heger, Supervisor of the Indiana Collection of the Indiana State Library spoke to Greenfield Kiwanis on January 10 about various aspects of the State Library. She informed the Kiwanians that the library serves four distinct functions. Genealogical research is about people, Reference and Research serves the state government and public, Manuscript preservation and archival maintain documents, and the Indiana collection catalogs information about places and things.

As supervisor of the Indiana collection Ms. Heger is responsible for a collection that contains maps and atlases; state laws from 1816 to the present; Indiana Newspapers from 1804; State agency reports and publications; histories, biographies, magazines, and journals; and manuscripts, broadsides, and photographs. The collection houses numerous databases. The newspaper collection includes over 100,000 reels of microfilm. The collection also houses city directories, cookbooks, and high school yearbooks.

Civil Air Patrol

Luke Grace discusses the Civil Air Patrol with Kiwanis Program Chair, Carol Landes.

Luke Grace, Cadet Commander of the 184^th Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (C.A.P.) based at Shelbyville, Indiana told the Kiwanis club members about the various programs and activities of the youth program started shortly before World War II.

The program is officially the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. Luke talked about the history of C.A.P. and it’s current composition. The cadets learn flying, leadership, model rocketry, teambuilding skills, earn rank and rewards, and explore aviation careers. The programs are all based around the core values of integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect.

Benefits of the programs include the opportunities for entry into the service at an advanced rank, scholarships, and an improved chance for admission to the military academies.

Greenfield Intermediate Collects Food

Greenfield Intermediate School K-Kids, a youth division of Greenfield Kiwanis held a food drive for the Hancock Food Pantry collecting over 2,000 pounds of food. The food was delivered in 3 trucks by Greenfield Kiwanis members to the food pantry. With previous contributions this brings the total that Kiwanis and Kiwanis youth collected to over 8,200 pounds of food as part of the the 40,000 pounds of food drive.

Super Celebration

Retta Livengood and Karen Kleine discuss the upcoming Super Celebration in Greenfield.

Retta Livengood, President of the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, told the Greenfield Kiwanis about upcoming events for the Chamber and the Super Celebration in Greenfield for Super Bowl.

In 2012 the Chamber’s goal is to engage their members more. They hold monthly luncheons on the first Tuesday for all members. On September 15 the Chamber will co-sponsor a “Taste of Hancock County” on the Courthouse Plaza.

Greenfield is a Super Celebration site for the upcoming Super Bowl on February 5. Mrs. Livengood told of the activities which include a Super Indy Car, Super Celebration Party, Super 46 Fun Party, Football Helmet Art Project, downtown football planters, welcome centers, and free bus shuttle service.

Pastro David Woods Tells of Kenya

David Woods, Senior Pastor of Park Chapel Christian Church spoke to Kiwanis about his recent trip to Kenya and the missions that members of Park Chapel support. Pastor Woods presented a narrative with pictures of the trip to Kenya. The trip allowed members of the church to visit children they sponsor and to see a church that was recently built. The mission had three components, a school, a feeding station, and a church. Each sponsored child receives clothing, 2 meals a day and an education. Without sponsorships children can not attend school and many go hungry, Many of the sponsored children only eat when at school.

Kiwanians tour food pantry

The Greenfield Kiwanis adjourned their December 13 meeting to the Hancock County Food Pantry on Blank Street in Greenfield where the members checked in as if they were clients and were given the tour of the facility as if they were receiving a monthly allotment of food.

The food pantry is one of the organizations that Kiwanis support with weekly food drives. Several Kiwanis members volunteer at the food pantry.

Kiwanians gather over 6,200 pounds of food for pantry

Greenfield Kiwanis members and their youth organizations gathered over 6,200 pounds of canned food, flour, sugar, detergent, toilet paper, toothpaste and other staples for the Hancock Food Pantry as part of the annual 40,000 pounds of food drive. This is in addition to the weekly contributions by Kiwanis to keep the food pantry supplied with "birthday bags", detergent, soap, and canned goods.

Kiwanians gathered to load trailers and trucks with food for the 40,000 pounds of food drive.

Over 6,700 pounds of food were gathered.

Kiwanis members after unloading the food onto 8 pallets. The group was supervised by Karen Kleine and Sondra Gullion who managed to avoid appearing in any pictures.

Youth from the Kiwanis sponsored Builders Club (Jr. High) and Key Club (High School) gathered Saturday morning to paint the fence at the Riley Home. Students have been helping spruce up the Riley fence for a number of years in time for the annual Riley Festival. Adult sponsors supervising the painting were; Doug Apple, Terry Beagle, Pat Parker and adult Kiwanians Jan Jackley, Scott Kleine and Karen Kleine assisted by the Parks Department.

Jane Cooney and Zero were introduced to Kiwanians by September program chairman, Pat Parker.

Jane Cooney, Math Coach at Harris Elementary, spoke to Kiwanis about “Zero, Her Hero”. Jane received a Lilly Endowment, Inc. (Teacher creativity) grant to travel and learn more about the number zero. While traveling, she posed with “Zero” a character designed by Jane and her students. Zero wears a cape (all heroes need a cape) with over 300 zeros added by students at Harris Elementary. She traveled to Italy, Greece and Turkey to study the influence of Fibonacci and how he influenced the evolution of numbers (especially the 0) used in math which influenced our own number system. Jane is very excited about math and her excitement builds interest in her students and helps to make math and learning fun.

My Mission, My Town

Troy Griesmeyer was introduced by Pat Parker as guest speaker.

Troy Griesmeyer spoke about “My Mission, My Town” to the Greenfield Kiwanis. In his day job as investment counselor at Edward D. Jones he found that he had outside interests but not a lot of time. His church, Park Chapel, does mission trips out of the U.S. and also to other states but these too, involve time. Liking the idea of helping others, he saw a need within his own community so with a friend began to help needy Greenfield people. He makes a point that they do not do work and repair for those that can afford to pay for the services so as not to take away business from people who make their living from repair. They help those that would have to do without or have it done free or not at all. Soon the need grew and now he works with a group associated with Love Inc. to help his own town.

Greenfield Kiwanis Donates $5,000

The Indiana District of Kiwanis International made a commitment to Riley Hospital for Children, to raise one million dollars to support the Riley/Wells Research Center for pediatric diabetes. At the Kiwanis Convention Sunday, August 14, 2011, the Greenfield Kiwanis Club presented a check for $5,000 to 2010 Governor Elaine Cummings-Bullard. Sondra Gullion and Karen Kleine from the Greenfield club presented the check. It was the largest amount given from any Indiana club. The donation was made possible from the sale of Kiwanis Easter carrots.

Indiana Kiwanis clubs have provided funding for many projects throughout the years. Indiana District Kiwanians believe in ‘serving the children’ and this contribution is meant to help children by finding a cure for Pediatric Diabetes through research. In the past ten years there has been an alarming increase in the number of children with diabetes. Each year, more than 15,000 youth are diagnosed in the US and is one of the most costly chronic childhood diseases

Food Resource Bank

John and Megan (daughter of John) Kube spoke to Kiwanis recently. John spoke about Elanco’s involvement with the Food Resource Bank. He told that over one billion people go to bed hungry every day. Through teamwork with the Resource Bank, companies and individuals can help provide needed food. The group tries to increase crop productivity through education. They are fighting hunger by collaboration with countries that need help and are teaching better methods and techniques for farming. The Bank has helped over 100,000 families over the years. Jim Cherry (Kiwanian and Hancock County farmer) farms 50 designated acres of farmland with the produce going to support the Bank.

The Kube’s visited one of the sponsored areas in Bolivia in February. Megan showed pictures of the beautiful mountainous area and the people and told of their visit. Rather than giving a handout, the group teaches how to improve production so as to become more self-sufficient.

Kirsten Clevenger, Physical Therapist

Kirsten Clevenger, Physical Therapist, spoke to Kiwanis recently. Kirsten has a degree in Physical Therapy and Physical Education and spoke about fall prevention. Fall prevention is important at any age but especially to people 65 or older as 60% of fall-related deaths occur among people 65 and older. More than one-third of adults 65+ fall each year. The causes range from unsafe living environment, medications, muscle weakness, and vision problems to balance problems. Prevention can begin with a regular exercise program. Balance and coordination exercises should be included in any program to help strengthen and improve the ability to prevent falls. The program should be approved by a doctor before beginning. Vision should be checked and making the home safer by keeping the floor free of items that can cause tripping (paper, books, shoes and small throw rugs) should help. Home areas should be well lit. Hand rails on both sides of stairs and good lighting on all stairways is important. These are just a few of the suggestions given to improve safety for any age.

Immigation Attorney

Recently speaking to Kiwanians was attorney, Angela Adams from Lewis & Kappes, Indianapolis Professional Corporation. Carol Landes, program chairman, introduced the young, vivacious attorney. She spoke about a very controversial subject; immigration. From her information we learned that the immigration laws are “broken” and something needs to be done. The federal government fails constantly to pass reform laws. This lack causes problems for individuals as well as businesses needing to employ immigrants. Nothing is as simple as it sounds…and many say…enter the US legally or go back and come back the right way. The catch 22 is that if someone has entered illegally and then goes back to reenter, they cannot return for 10 years (there are also a few exceptions to this law but even those require 5 years to requalify).

Marrying a US citizen does not fix the problem if they have entered without inspection (or legally) and if they go back to country of origin, once again, they cannot return for 10 years. A possible exception is to earn a waiver for extreme hardship (only if married to a US citizen) but with the backlog of cases; this is not a good answer either.

Permanent status is granted with a green card (which is not green at all). Only a limited number are issued per country and to enter our country on a Tourist Visa is difficult because it is hard to get and the wait is long.

Many people think the simple solution to the problem is to round up all illegals and deport them. This too, is stymied by law and a deportation back log. The answer to the problem is not at all simple and due to antiquated laws, it seems evident that much needs to be changed.

Greenfield Fire Department

Greenfield Fire Chief Jim Roberts spoke to Kiwanis at a recent meeting. Beginning with a little personal history, Roberts told that he served as a volunteer fireman before joining the force. He had always been interested in firefighting and served for 18 years before being appointed Fire Chief. Becoming Chief was one of his life goals and he is enjoying the position. He oversees two stations, the downtown location as well as the newer station on New Road. The stations have two ambulances plus reserve vehicles, a tanker and a ladder truck in the downtown location, rescue trucks plus other fire engines. When questioned about need for a ladder truck when Greenfield does not have high rise buildings, he explained that what Greenfield has are “wide buildings” that they need the capability to reach over the top to apply water to fires.

There are 46 career fire fighters, EMTs and Paramedics associated with the department. Constant training is part of the job. There are 28 Volunteer staff members and they participate in 24 hours of training per month to stay active and are paid a small monthly stipend. Firemen serve 24 hour shifts with 13 members per shift serving.

Approximately 3,000 runs per year are made with 80% of them being ambulance runs. Each run consists of an ambulance and fire rescue vehicle to ensure that the patient is treated as quickly as possible. A question about Life Line answered that the fire or police department makes the call about when they should be called and where they should land, depending on the circumstance.

The Greenfield area covers 52 square miles of Greenfield and Center Township and serves basically all of Hancock County on a mutual aid agreement.

Besides fire and emergency runs, the department does 700-800 Commercial inspections per year to make sure fire codes are met. They also do Fire Safety education for schools and pre-schools and homes for elderly.

A cadet program in conjunction with the high school provides training in fire fighting to students. Four former cadets are presently serving as Volunteer firemen.

An additional duty is checking and maintaining apparatus and equipment. Most meals are cooked on site and each shift handles duties differently.

Present goals include finding and purchasing land to build a third station.

Indiana State Parks

Ginger Murphy, Assistant Director for Stewardship for the Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs, spoke to Kiwanis about Indiana’s state parks. On 32 properties the system covers 171,123 acres and hosts 15.8 million visitors a year. They maintain 2,080 buildings, 600 miles of trails, and 61,000 acres of hunting land. They also have 31,000 acres of lakes, 73 boat ramps, and 17 marinas. There are 14 year-round interpretive centers with 631 inn rooms and 7,797 campsites and 149 cabins. There are 17,000 picnic tables, 174 picnic shelters, 163 playgrounds. All of this is staffed by 348 full-time staff and is paid for with entrance/rental fees and a per capita cost to Hoosiers annually of only $1.89. Indiana is fortunate to have one of the best park systems in the country.

Ginger handles education for Indiana school children and helps with resource management. She told that she came from Kentucky and originally thought “Indiana was just a long cornfield” but was surprised and pleased with the diversity and variety of our state and parks.

Ginger gave a questionnaire on “How Much Do You Know About Indiana’s State Parks and Reservoirs?” It was discovered that not enough was known since the top score was 12 of 32 possible. After hearing about the 32 properties, the group is more knowledgeable and many plan to visit parks new to them.

Voter Redistricting

Kathy Richardson, State Representative from Noblesville, presented Kiwanis members with a program about redistricting. She was appointed to the committee by the Speaker of the House. She was a caucus chairperson and has had experience as a county clerk. She has been involved in government issues for 30 years. The redistricting is based on the 2010 census. Congressional areas can not vary by more than one person. The new map will take effect 7/1/11. Then, local districts will have to be rebalanced. Hancock County will be represented by three members instead of two. These representatives are Bob Cherry, Brian Bosma and Sean Eberhart. Senator Gard’s area will change and include Hancock County as well as a small part of Marion and Shelby counties.

Patrick McDaniel, New Kiwanian

New member, Patrick McDaniel, was the featured “Meet Your Kiwanian” for the month of June. Program chairs for June were Cheryl Bruns and Kristin Fewell.

McDaniel told his history as a Hancock County resident. He attended Purdue University and majored in Forestry. After graduation, he worked for the park services in Minnesota, Wyoming, and Florida. Florida was his least favorite because “everything there wants to bite”.

A second career was in ministry and after graduating again, he lead the Greenfield Church of Christ. He is now on his third career working in pre-planning for Stillinger Funeral Home. After working around the country, he finds home is best.

2011 Scholarship Winners

Erin Komornik, former Eastern Hancock high school graduate and present Depauw student, received a $1,000 scholarship check and read her winning essay to Kiwanis members at the recent meeting. She received the Bill Griffing science scholarship to study Kinesiology (exercise science).

Sarah Mueller received the Robert Eagleston Business scholarship. She plans to study Agri-economics/business at Purdue University.

Bethany Sickle received the J.B. Stephens Education award. She plans to attend Anderson University and study Elementary Education.

Kiwanis is proud to award these scholarships recognizing outstanding students. The girls read their winning essays about the importance of community service to Kiwanis.

Kiwanis is one of few groups that consider college students for scholarship awards. Most are given to graduating seniors but college students are encouraged to apply.

Balanced School Calendar

Ann Vail, Assistant Superintendant of Greenfield Central Schools, spoke to Kiwanis about the new “Balanced School Calendar”. The calendar, which is required by state law to contain 180 days of school for students, will now have the school year divided evenly into four quarters. There will be 90 days in each semester. The first semester will end before Christmas break. After listening to parent comments, she feels the chosen calendar is as close as possible to matching requirements and parent concerns. While not everyone is happy about starting school on August 1, she thinks that the two week breaks in October, December and March will help make up for the August early start. Snow or make-up days are included into the first week of vacations but the second week will be left for vacation planning. Most other traditional breaks will remain with Labor Day off and the two day Thanksgiving break the same. Summer break will be eight weeks.

County Extension Educator

Roy Ballard, County Agent with the Purdue Extension Office, spoke to Kiwanis. He explained that the County Agent is a very busy person who deals with many programs and promotes activities such as Health and Human Sciences, 4-H, Master Gardener Program, SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education), Farmers Market, Agri-tourism and working with the Hancock County Solid Waste Management to mention just a few. He answers questions from people about lawn care, pesticides, tree problems and how to get rid of moles (you don’t). He advises farmers on organic farming. He advised a way to save Ash trees (expensive but worth it for a tree on your lot but probably not cost efficient for whole woods). Contact him at the Extension Office for further details. Christi Barber, new Executive Director of the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation, spoke to Kiwanis. She was introduced by May program chairman, Walt Waitt.

Barber hopes to see the foundation continue to grow and support Hancock Regional Hospital. Presently they are working toward funding of a new Hospice Unit. Barber says the need for hospice care is growing as our population ages. To meet this need, the HRH Foundation has begun raising 3.1 million to fund an endowment which will support the care of hospice patients now and in the future. They have raised $750,000 and will continue fund raising to make the new unit possible.
The foundation also recently awarded eleven scholarships totaling $22,000 for Edith Zike nursing scholarships. Fund raising events on the calendar include the 33rd Annual Golf Benefit on June 17 at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield Golf Course. He considers his job as being a salesman (marketing/selling) of Hancock County as a good place to locate and invest. While working for Hancock County, he spends much time away from Hancock County, making contacts and getting our name out there. Companies interested in Hancock County need to know about our tax structure, zoning, and availability of work force. Much information is gathered through web sites but relationships are helpful. Information usually comes from the state to us, but there are times that it comes to us first, from contacts made by the Council.

Habitat for Humanity

Janice Boring, from Shelby County, spoke to Kiwanis about her work with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat International is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that seeks to make decent shelter available to needy people. By working together in partnership to help build houses, Habitat has built more than 225,000 houses around the world, providing 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds with the help of homeowner families. They are sold to the chosen partner family at no profit, financed with affordable mortgages. One of the most familiar names associated with Habitat is that of former president Jimmy Carter.

Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a modest down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor “sweat equity” into building their house and the houses of others.

In Shelby County there is a waiting list of applicants who are screened by a committee and take classes about home management. Janice Boring teaches some of the classes.

Habitat for Humanity’s mission statement is that they are building houses, building communities and building hope. Habitat works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to develop communities with people in need so every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

Mt. Vernon HighTech Academy

There are no other academies like this in the whole country. Kiwanis heard members from SADD (Students against Destructive Decisions) from Mt. Vernon High School. The group was originally associated with a group called VOICE that worked against the use of tobacco but the group now advocates against all destructive behavior. Behaviors such as Drinking, Drugs, Smoking, Texting or Eating while driving or anything that might take attention away from driving or living responsibly. The group works to enhance awareness of harmful activities that could lead to problems. They work to educate younger students about making healthy choices. United Way

Paula Jarrett, from United Way of Central Indiana, spoke to Kiwanis. She said that the Metropolitan United Way serves six counties and they have a local office at One Courthouse Plaza. It is a nonprofit organization which helps improve lives and build stronger communities. A question asked about sending donations to the Indianapolis address informed that all money sent is in turn returned to Hancock County. In fact, Hancock County receives more monies and services than is actually paid from local donations.

The United Way Mission is to help sustain vital human services. Our community priorities are those plus helping kids enter school ready to learn and graduate ready to earn.

In the past two years $200,000 in Community Economic Relief Fund was disbursed to Hancock residents (whose incomes were too high for traditional federal aid). More than $8 million was distributed across six counties

United Way partner agencies provided more than $777,000 in services to county residents last year. Calls to the Central Indiana helpline show that utilities, housing and mental health services are of greatest need.

United Way is focused on education because only two-thirds of area 9th graders will graduate in four years. Changing the dropout rate can change an entire community and as a result, reduce future human service needs.

Examples of programs and services for children and youth are: Backpack Attack with 40,000 new school supplies distributed to all 18 elementary, middle, intermediate and junior high schools in Hancock County; Early Readers Club with more than 700 children under age 6 enrolled to receive 12 high-quality children’s books each year; Born Learning which provide parenting education materials; ReadUP which is a tutoring program for third graders to help them become better readers and succeed in school. This program becomes doubly important if the state passes the new directive that requires 3rd graders to pass a state test before being passed to grade 4. (More local tutors are still needed for ReadUP and if you can help, call the United Way office to volunteer. You do not have to be a teacher to participate in the program…just love to read).

In 2010 the United Way campaign raised $310,000. The top 6 companies raised 83% of the total contributed. The top 6 were; Elanco, Hancock Regional Hospital, Greenfield Banking Company, Covance Inc., Hancock Physician Network and Keihin IPT Mfg.

Of interest to many was information about the Connect 2 Help program. Instead of dialing 9-1-1 for emergency, dial 2-1-1 to find what help is available for people. It directs to services that are needed and many don’t know are there, such as aid for utility bill paying or where food is available as well as other needs.

Retta Livengood, President of Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, spoke to Kiwanis about the Chamber. She told that the Chamber is dedicated to their mission of “Partnering for Prosperity”. The traditional role of a Chamber of Commerce was to be the voice of business. Presently, our Chamber (founded in 1951) has evolved beyond that role to work towards broader community goals. Once they concentrated on building relationships with other businesses, but now include building relationships within the community. The focus is on the measurable impact a Chamber can have not only on members but also on the community.

The Chamber advocates for businesses and presents opportunities for members to connect with potential customers through a variety of Chamber events. They plan to be a source for educational and business seminars and to enhance the talents and resources of members. They strive to improve economic vitality and quality of life for Greenfield, Hancock County and the surrounding areas.

Indiana’s Tobacco Prevention Program

Brandee Bastin spoke to Kiwanis about her work with Indiana’s Tobacco Prevention Program. Working for a tobacco free Indiana has been a priority for ten years. The mission is to create a healthier community through the prevention and cessation of tobacco use in Hancock County.

In the past ten years, smoking rates for high school youth have dropped by 42 percent. Adult smoking rates have decreased from 27 percent to 23 percent. This means there are 207,000 fewer smokers in Indiana. Over the past decade decreased tobacco use has saved $3.1 billion in future health care costs, including $512 million in Medicaid claims. Indiana’s prevention program manages without tax dollars. These services are funded by the Master Settlement Agreement between Indiana and the tobacco industry.

Over 70% of Indiana’s schools have a tobacco free campus. Bastin says that while much has been accomplished, there is still work to be done. Indiana has a 21% smoking rate which sounds good until compared with 17% nationwide which puts us in the top ten tobacco using states.

One of Bastin’s favorite facts used to emphasis the harm of tobacco use is that “Tobacco is the only legal product that kills one third of its users if used as directed”.

Nicole Morley, President of the Key Club at Greenfield Central High School, spoke to Kiwanis about her experience at Kiwanis Service Leadership Conference. Approximately 100 students attended the conference held at Rancho Framasa in Nashville, Indiana. Greenfield Kiwanis sponsored Nicole at the conference. Nicole thanked Kiwanians for the opportunity for the experience that she thoroughly enjoyed. The program was created by Kiwanis International and is conducted by adult and student facilitators. While at the conference, Morley met many new friends and learned that a Key Leader is an active listener, is empathetic, committed to the community, aware of self and others, helps people grow, is persuasive, is compassionate, builds community, is caring and turns goals and plans into action.

Hancock County Hope House

Kelley Mires from the Hancock County Hope House spoke to Kiwanis. She told that the Hope House serves people from Hancock, Rush and Shelby counties. There is a 35 bed capacity limit. Even though Hope House is considered to be the “Ritz” of homeless shelters, they still have rules and regulations that patrons must follow. If you are staying at the Hope House, there are educational programs provided to help with banking, parenting and job searching. A 7:00 a.m. wake up time is observed with clean up help required and then out to begin a job or job search from 9:00 to 5:00. Curfew is observed with lights out by 11:00 p.m. and earlier for children staying in the Home. Hope House is funded by donations and grants. They also work with county teens on a youth board called YEAH which stands for Youth Educating and Advocating for Homeless.

Hope House sponsors youth services, programs and a thrift store. Individuals or families may stay as long as needed providing rules are followed and an effort is made to learn and become independent.

Hancock Senior Services

Linda Hart, director of Hancock County Senior Services, spoke to Kiwanis. She told of the many services offered. They include Transportation which is approximately 50% of the program. They provide non-emergency transportation for various destinations. Rides are scheduled first come-first served. Wheelchair transportation is also available. One does not have to be a senior to use the program. Other programs are; Volunteer visitors to reduce isolation and provide general assistance; Homemaker services that provide light housekeeping assistance; Telephone Reassurance and Safety checks; Outreach where staff provides in-home assessment and assists with bill payment along with other advice; Handyman provides basic yard care, snow removal, minor repairs; Respite/Assisted Care to relieve an unpaid caregiver by providing supervision assistance; Information and Referral to answer questions for community resources and Legal Assistance. Payment for services is based on ability to pay and difficulty of duties.

The Transportation program has 16 trained drivers. A strict drug and alcohol restriction requirement is enforced and drivers are randomly tested. The program is lucky to have a highly skilled driver trainer on staff.

Hancock Senior Services is presently planning to build new offices and garages so they don’t waste time removing ice and snow. They are hoping to get funding from a large donation from Eli Lilly. The fund provides 50% of the cost so grants and other fund raisers will be necessary. In 2003 three hundred ninety patrons were served with over 900 being served already this year.

Indianapolis Airport Authority

Susan Sullivan from the Indianapolis Airport Authority was introduced by December program chairman, Marty Foster, to Kiwanis.

Susan Sullivan from the Indianapolis Airport Authority spoke to Kiwanis. She was proud to tell us that the airport was number one in North America for airports serving fewer than 10 million passengers per year as reported by JD Powers and Associates. Airports were judged on cleanliness and speed of check-in by those polled. The airport is further recognized as one of the top airports for handling cargo shipments.

She told that the new airport was the result of over thirty years of study and planning. They are presently conducting studies on land use and new service development. Use of the old airport is presently undecided. Many suggestions have been made for use, such as a shopping mall or more cargo distribution centers.

A Riley Home Christmas

Brigette Jones from the Riley Home spoke to Kiwanis. She brought books and told history about J.W. Riley’s friend Will Vawter. Will was much younger than Riley but Riley met him when he moved to Greenfield as a young boy. Riley, a sign painter himself, noticed Will’s artistic talent and was very impressed. Will eventually did illustrations for some of Riley’s books. Will was born in 1871 in West Virginia but moved to Greenfield when he was six years old. He loved to paint and was a self taught artist. He did magazine illustration and therefore was not a starving artist. He became interested in oil painting and painted in an impressionistic style using a palette knife which applied the paint thickly to the canvas. He eventually moved to Brown County to join a colony of artists there. Today Will’s paintings are valued at over $10,000 each and some have sold for more. Will Vawter is buried in Park Cemetery.

Gwen Betor from the Riley Home also invited the public to “A Storybook Christmas at the Riley Home 1863” to be Saturday, December 4, and Saturday, December 11 with tours from 5:00-8:00 PM. Storytellers in period costume will tell tales of Riley’s boyhood chums & their adventures. Entertainers will provide Christmas music of the era. Contact Parks & Recreation for registration. Cost is $4 per adult and $1.25 per child.

Hancock County Children's Theater

Pam Johnson, director of the Hancock County Children’s Theater, spoke to Kiwanis. She thanked Kiwanis for their long time support. The theater group was originally formed in 1987 and included students in grades 5 through 8 at the four Hancock County schools. Students apply to be part of the group and receive recommendations from their teachers and parents. They may apply to be part of the art or music side of the production. While the purpose was to provide creative outlet for artistic and musically talented students, the side benefit was for students from the county schools to get to know and appreciate one another in a non-competitive format. The group consists of 150 students and six/seven staff members. The schools originally financed the production but due to cut back of school funds, the theater now counts on sponsorships by groups and organizations to help defray costs. Students are in charge of production, lighting, scenery, programs, costumes and all parts of the show. All participants learn much during the month of June and along with knowledge gained, memories are made for a lifetime. The shows are given on two nights and are double cast to give more students a chance to shine. Approximately 1500 proud parents, grandparents and friends attend. Watch for the next production in June 2011.

Nancy's Boutique

Lisa Wood from Hancock Regional Hospital and some of her staff spoke to Kiwanis about the Nancy King Boutique to be opened in the Anderson Women’s Center. The opening date will be announced later. Lisa told that items from the Boutique will be billable to insurance and will not cost the patient at the time of fitting. Medicare allows six new bras per year (three at a time) and women are encouraged to come yearly for refitting and to see the new products available.

The staff is presently taking training on fitting the line of personal items that the boutique will carry. Also speaking was Shelly Schwentker, a representative from the Amoena retail line of breast forms and lingerie. She showed the many new possibilities available for women surviving or thriving after breast cancer. The Boutique will also carry scarves, caps and swim products but not wigs as there is already an outlet in Greenfield.

Christmas Festival

Brian Mason spoke to Kiwanis about the 2010 Christmas Festival of Lights. The parade and festival have been part of downtown Greenfield for eight years, starting in 2003 and originally sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. The festival has grown over the years and after the kickoff parade on December 3, 2010, there will be a whole week of activities. Added this year is “Breakfast with Santa and Friends” to be held at the American Legion. Some of the friends are Sponge Bob and Cinderella plus some surprises. Tickets will be $10 and only a limited number of seats are available so plan and purchase tickets early. Tickets are available at the Chamber Office.

The theme this year for the parade and planter décor is “Story Book”. Twenty-five of the downtown planters are available for groups to decorate.

Jaycie Phelps will be featured as the Parade Leader and the parade ends with the opening of the Santa House (sponsored by Kiwanis). Part of the week celebration will include Wilkerson’s Dance studio presentation of the Nutcracker and the Community Choir and Band show to be on Sunday at Park Chapel. Greg Cross spoke to Kiwanis about his “Hello Hancock” website. He and the late Nancy King met in a Leadership Indiana class and she expressed her desire for a community calendar. She hoped it would list activities and events in Hancock County that would help groups and organizations plan events so they would not compete with one another. Greg owned the web domain and had named it “Hello Hancock” and thought this would be a perfect place to establish the calendar. It is up and running now and is a place for any Hancock County club or organization to list their events. Diane stressed that slur words bother her most and that sometimes words used unthinkingly can create a stigma toward an individual. Words such as insane, psycho, psychotic, crazy etc. should be used sparingly if at all. She told us that a person is not “psychotic” as that is a term used to describe a set of symptoms and not a person.

Kara is the new person working for the Association. She is from Hancock County and is very enthusiastic about her job. She said that MHA is a non-profit organization working to encourage, provide, and advocate for mental health and emotional wellness. They have served Hancock County since 1954. One of the most familiar services of the Assn. is the holiday gift lift which donations are used to provide items and cheer for isolated senior citizens, mentally ill, and developmentally disabled residents of Hancock County.

Kiwanis Aktion Clubs

Don Collins, District Chairman of Aktion Club in Shelbyville, Indiana, spoke to local Kiwanians. He told that an Aktion Club is a community-service group for adults living with disabilities. The mission is to provide adults an opportunity to develop the ability to serve their community and to demonstrate the value of citizens living with disabilities.

An Aktion Club is sponsored by a Kiwanis club but can also be sponsored by a group of clubs or a division. There are Aktion Clubs in Shelbyville and Noblesville.

Aktion club members attend meetings to learn about community issues, plan service and fundraising projects, and enjoy fellowship with others. Club members perform community service such as park beautification, food drives, and nursing home visitations. Members make visits to zoos, museums, and sporting events to share time with one another.

Membership is open to any adult living with a disability who wants to become a leader in community service to others. Each club elects officers and organizes member into committees. Club meetings are similar to Kiwanis meetings and are held once a week and last about one hour.

Aktion Club is an official Kiwanis sponsored program, and a member of the Kiwanis family which includes: K-Kids (elementary school), Builders Club (junior high), Key Club (high school), Circle K International (college), Kiwanis Junior (young adults), Kiwanis (adults).

Super Bowl 2012

Chris Gahl, Volunteer Co-Chair and Director of Communications for the Indianapolis Visitors Bureau, spoke to Kiwanis about the 2012 Super Bowl. The epic game is only 530 (from 8-24) days away. He told about all that went in to winning the bid for the Bowl game and what that win would do for the city and surrounding donut areas.

In order to be in the running for the game, the city had to have 70,000 seats available and be connected to a Convention Center for the NFL for use for the NFL Experience, a required number of hotel rooms in the area, restaurants and a required number of “beer taps”. Also, two practice areas within a 50 mile radius had to be provided. Indy has one at the Colts complex but the second had to be added and it will be built at the University of Indianapolis. After the bowl, one million dollars worth of turf will be donated to Tech High School for “Project Legacy”. The hope of all is to leave a “positive footprint” on the city that will lead to recovery of areas of Indianapolis that have needed help. Happening right now is the planting of 2,012 trees. By Bowl time, Indianapolis will have the trees growing and that will help beautify the area and be a lasting contribution.

What will this do for the city and area? The Super Bowl has become an unofficial holiday and expects to add 125 to 400 million which provides a huge economic impact to our community. This represents a huge return on the 25 million dollar investment. The Bowl is the most watched primetime network telecast. The Super Bowl promises at least 120,000 visitors as compared to the 80,000 that attend the NCAA tourney. Fans from 230 countries are expected. NBC will be telecasting the game in 2012 and the TODAY show as well as NBC nightly news will be in Indianapolis the week before the game.

Elanco in Greenfield

Joan Todd from Elanco in Greenfield spoke to Kiwanis. Todd and her family moved to Greenfield from Hamilton County. She highly recommends living here. They live north of Maxwell with her many horses, dogs and cats.

She told us that Elanco is in the animal business. Their purpose is to produce healthy food to produce healthy animals. They support the Heifer animal program which provides an animal to an impoverished foreign family. Their theory being that “to give a man a fish, he eats for one day but teach him how to fish and he has food for life.” They also partner with the local Food Pantry.

Elanco topped one billion dollars in sales last year and while that is only 5% of Lilly’s global business, it was a number to be noticed. They also do a smaller amount with pet care.

The new three building complex was built especially for Elanco. The Greenfield location was chosen because of easy proximity to restaurants and hotels as they host many foreign visitors each year.

The new Gas America being built on Elanco property but not owed by Elanco, will include a restaurant new to our area. It is “Miami Sub/Pizza”.

Joan was a knowledgeable and vivacious speaker about her company and said that tours of the facility could be arranged by reservation to interested groups.

Tatiana Day, HRH Foundation

Tatiana Day, Executive Director of the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation, spoke to Kiwanias. She started the program with a game called “didja know” to present some facts and figures about the hospital. Didja know that 478 babies were born in 2009 at the hospital. “ Didja know” the hospital has over 400 volunteers contributing over 55,000 hours per year which adds up to one million dollars of service. “Didja know” that the ER recorded 27,700 visits in 2009. Charity Care amounts to $4.5 million in service given back to the community which means 4.7% of earned revenue goes back to the community. A 4.6 million dollar surplus is used for new equipment. The Foundation is “the helping hand that assists the hospitals programs and services to even more work in addressing the community health needs.” No Tax dollars are used to keep the hospital running.

The new Anderson Women’s Center opened in December and was funded by community support. Tatiana’s job consists of helping raise funds as well as working to provide Knowledge about the hospital, provide inspiration to people to get involved and serve as an advocate to recruit time, talent and treasure. It takes a lot to carry on the hospital mission which is “To be a caring community partner dedicated to enhancing the health of the patients and communities we serve.”

Tatiana is a graduate of New Palestine High School, Butler University, and University of Southern California. She has worked in philanthropy in Arizona and in community health services in Los Angeles, California before coming back home to continue her career.

Indiana State Museum Program

Linda McCabe from the Indiana State Museum spoke to Kiwanis recently about the museum. She said that the Indiana State Museum is a place to come to celebrate, investigate, remember, learn and take pride in Indiana’s story.

We learned that the state museum started collecting in 1869 and was originally located in a basement and was moved in 1968 to Indianapolis City Hall and in 2002 was moved to the new White River State Park location. The building was funded with state funds and donations. Inside the museum are representations of all the stone materials found in our state. Presently the museum contains 540,000 artifacts related to Indiana present and past. 60,000 school students visited the museum last year.

An exciting event coming to the Museum starting September 23 through July 16, 2011, will be the Titanic Exhibition. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 and the display will include over 240 items recovered from two and one half miles below the surface of the North Atlantic. “Visitors will become passengers as they receive a boarding pass and experience the excitement of the fateful night. They will move through the Ship’s construction and marvel at the recreated first and third class cabins, view the cargo and press palms against an iceberg”. There will be an additional $10 charge for the display.

The museum is looking for volunteers to help run the Santa’s train ride in December. Anyone interested in volunteering at the museum can contact the museum at 317-232-1637 or check their web site at indianamuseum.org.

Backpack Attack

Duane Johnson, manager of the Greenfield Walgreen store rings up five carts of school supplies purchased by Greenfield Kiwanis club to donate to the Backpack Attack. Walgreen’s helps the community by providing items at cost so more items can be purchased to help children. The school supplies were taken to the United Way Office and will be assembled and given to Hancock County Schools. The schools will give the packs of supplies to children that need help providing required supplies.

Greenfield Kiwanis featured Don and Marcy Hoffman as speakers of the month in “Meet a Kiwanian (or two)”. The Hoffman’s regaled the group with the story of their meeting and life before and in Greenfield. Don came from Ohio and Marcy from California but consider themselves happy Hoosiers now.

Chief Jester talks to Kiwanis

John Jester, Greenfield Chief of Police, spoke to Greenfield Kiwanis recently. He explained that he has 38 officers (one female officer), and one undercover detective on his staff. There are currently three narcotics officers counting sheriff and state police in the community working drug trafficking along I-70. Ten officers serve voluntarily on a SWAT team. Unfortunately crime problems in Hancock County have become more serious.

Many juvenile crimes have slowed due to stringent curfew laws. Home invasions have increased and criminals have become bolder in the area. Hard drugs are not as large a problem in Greenfield as in other areas but pills have become a bigger problem. Gang involvement is seen as minimal so far.

The Department is constantly working on image. The Shop with A Cop program helps show a kinder side of the law. Also, a Citizen’s Academy to educate adults into how police procedure works has generated community support for the department.

One of the best items added for use by the department is the “Dash Cam.” Putting video recorders in each car provides proof of activities that make for better understanding for families of offenders.

Attending a Kiwanis meeting in Greenfield were present Lt. Governor of the Rose Division, Bruce Johnson from Cambridge City and incoming Lt. Governor, Bob Jacobsen from Richmond.

Greenfield Kiwanis hosted the Rose Division at their meeting recently. Twenty-four guests from Brookville, Cambridge City, Richmond, Connersville, and New Castle attended and shared information about fund raising.

Nan Hendrickson presents Riley poems

Nan Hendrickson, former resident of Greenfield, gave the program for July. She read and recited some of the poems of James Whitcomb Riley and brought some old books and “paper dolls” of Riley and Orphant Annie. She also read us a poem she had written about Granny’s kisses (they won’t wash of, you know).

Marty Foster joined Kiwanis at the last club meeting. She was sponsored by Dan Riley and has lived in the Greenfield area for eight years.

Kiwanis invites new members to join. Anyone interested in joining a fun and great service organization may come as a guest to a regular meeting on Tuesdays at the Victorian Rose at 6:00 p.m. One exception is the regular Tuesday meeting on July 13 was changed to Monday, July 12 and included the Rose Division District meeting. There will be no meeting Tuesday, July 13. Come any other Tuesday to get acquainted.

Park Supt. Previews Video

Tracy Doyle from Greenfield Parks & Recreation Department showed a video to Kiwanis Club members. The video was made to promote activities available in Greenfield. It showed that the park department, in addition to caring for the Riley Home, Riley Park and pool, has planted 1,000 trees to beautify the area. They care for the Pennsy Trail plus with help from “America in Bloom” have planted flowers around signs and filled hanging baskets in downtown Greenfield. It helps show Greenfield at it’s best.

Boys and Girls Club Smart Girls program

Candace Sexton from the Hancock County Boys and Girls Club spoke to Kiwanis. Sexton is Unit Director of Youth Programs. She told about the Smart Girls program which encourages teens to exhibit better choices and good behavior and to develop a better self image. Another program, Passport to Manhood, is the male version and encourages respect of others and that being “macho” can be good if properly channeled.

Daily attendance at the club is 75-100 and lunch is served. The club received a $50,000 grant from Lowes and is working on remodeling the club. A July “Open House” is planned for the community to see the improvements.

Summer camp at the club provides recreation from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Within the club there is a Torch Club of 8-12 year olds and Keystone Club of 13-18 year olds who help serve as roll models to the younger or new members of the club. The club serves as a home away from home for kids with working parents and nothing to do and makes a difference in the lives of many.

Stephanis Jones gives Kiwanis 4H Fair Preview

Stephanie Jones from the Hancock County 4-H Office spoke to Kiwanis about what 4-H is doing this summer. 4-H is a youth organization led by Sarah Burke, educator, along with her staff. Since 1995 the growth of 4-H in the county has increased from 592 members to the 1,389 youth enrolled in the program this year.

4-H projects have expanded from more than just livestock and foods to many other subjects of interest to youth. One program, Jr. Leaders, supports philanthropic projects in the county and last year provided a total of 11,373 hours of community service.

New this year along with the usual summer camps is an Entrepreneurship Investigation Camp for 6th–8th graders sponsored by a grant from the Erlewein Charitable Community Fund. They will meet with area business, visit local small businesses and hear speakers on marketing, banking, economic development and legal issues. Campers will create a business plan and learn how to market their idea. They have the possibility of earning a $50 cash starter for their business.

New at the Fair are Sponsorship Days similar to the State fair and there will be a tent on the main thoroughfare of the fairground advertising the sponsoring business of the day.

Also new are events such as Donkey Races and Donkey Basketball and they promise to be lots of fun for both participant and spectator.

Junior Master Gardeners will have a garden on display in the 4-H Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts sponsored the garden and the food will be donated to Hancock Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry.

On July 16, “Elvince”, an Elvis impersonator, will offer a free concert in the 4-H Bowl. All of the favorite booths will again be at the Fair. The Fair runs July 9-16 with something for everyone

Food Pantry TP Drive

Three happy graduating seniors from Eastern Hancock High School visited Kiwanis to read their winning essays and accept $1,000 checks from Kiwanis. Heather received the J.B. Stephens scholarship for education and will be attending Ball State University and majoring in music education. Dorie Clevenger, accepted the Griffing scholarship for science and will major in nursing at Wesleyan University. Austin Gibble won the Eagleston business scholarship and will also attend Ball State with plans to major in business management. The scholarships are named to honor three Kiwanians and presented yearly to students who wrote about importance of community involvement

Nancy King dies

Daily Reporter ObituaryNancy King, former president, secretary, and tireless worker for Greenfield Kiwanis passed away Monday, May 31 at Hancock Regional Hospital. Nancy, a retired home economics educator for the extension service was active in her chruch, the Greenfield Christian church. She also served several local organizations including the Riley Festival, the Women Helping Women program, and the Hancock Regional Hospital Guild. She wrote a weekly column on cooking and home economics for the Daily Reporter. She served as a judge at local county and the Indiana State Fairs.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2010, at the mortuary. Pastor David Woods will officiate and burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation- Nancy King Cancer Boutique or the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation Volunteer Guild, both at 801 N.
