Consumer Protection

Kiwanian Chris Norwood with Michelle Mayer of the Indiana Attorney General's Office
Michelle Mayer of the Consumer Protection Division of the Indiana Attorney General’s office told Kiwanians about common scams and schemes to separate consumers from their money or to steal their identity.  She distilled the information down to two rules.

  1. Do not send strangers money
  2. Do not give your personal information to people on the telephone unless you have made the call.  The same holds true for the computer.
She covered the Nigerian, advance loan fee, lottery, phishing e-mail, overpayment, disaster relief scams, credit repair, work from home, home repair and free trial offer scams.
She also spoke about identity theft and how to freeze you credit account to prevent this.
