Nameless Creek Youth Camp

Barb Kauchak, Nameless Creek Youth Camp board member and Kiwanan told of the PIN Camp that will take place next week.   PIN Camp is about plugging into nature at the camp during the day camp.  The day camp has 48 registered campers.  There is a need for paper products especially heavy paper plates, 10 oz red plastic solo cups, plastic utensils, paper napkins, and paper towels.

Club members enjoyed good weather at the Hancock County Public Library's Books on Brains contest.  The original objective was to have 1,000 people walk 5 1/2 yards balancing a book on their head to break a Guinness World Record.  Only about 700 were present so we set a North American record but failed at the World Record. 

Meet Your Kiwanian

 

Carole Maynard, introduced herself to the Kiwanis club during the May "Meet Your Kiwanian"  meeting.   Carole is a lifelong resident of Hancock County having been born in Willow Branch.  She and her late husband had one son a grandson.  Carole spent her professional career working in the Hancock County Assessor's  Office beginning in 1968.  She went on to serve 22 years as Assessor.  During her terms in office she implemented aerial maps and automated systems.

2015-2016 Officer and Board Slate

HCCF Scholarship Process

Mary Gibble, President of Hancock County Community Foundation and Kari Sisk, HCCF Scholarship Officer

Kari Sisk, Scholarship Officer and Mary Gibble, President of Hancock County Community Foundation told Kiwanians about changes to the 2016 Scholarship process.  Kiwanis annually presents 3 scholarships to Hancock County students.  Previously the students would complete the Kiwanis applications and also fill out an application for any HCCF scholarships.  In the future students will fill out the common scholarship application and forms once.  Any special requirements for Kiwanis will also be completed.  Each application will be anonymously be forwarded to the Kiwanis scholarship committee for review and preliminary adjudication.  The results will be given to HCCF who will then finalize the process and perform the notifications.  The community foundation can present the scholarship or we can.

GCHS Rover

Scott Kleine, Kiwanis member and volunteer with the GCHS Moonbuggy Rover project told Kiwanians about the 2015 challenge.  The team consists of  Austin Jones, a Senior; Rachel Visnack, a Junior; Miranda Shook, a Sophomore; Spencer Baker, a Sophomore; Graeme Basey, a Junior; Adam Grimes, a Senior; Bill McKenna, GCHS  Radio/TV teacher;  Rebecca Schini, GCHS Science Teacher; Scott Kleine, Professional Engineer and team volunteer; Beth Shook, Parent and Transportation; and Susan Baker, Webmaster. 

The NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge was held April 16-18, 2015, at the U. S. Space & Rocket Center. The challenge focused on designing, constructing and testing technologies for mobility devices to perform in these different environments, and it provided valuable experiences that engaged students in the technologies and concepts that will be needed in future exploration missions.

Rovers are human-powered and carry two students, one female and one male, over a half-mile obstacle course of simulated extraterrestrial terrain of craters, boulders, ridges, inclines, crevasses and depressions.
