Kiwanis and HC Library helping children

Barbara Roark, Bambi Pea, and Catherine Riley from Hancock County Public Library told Kiwanis about the library and it’s shared mission with Kiwanis of helping children. 
 
Barbara Roark, the Assistant Director, told Kiwanis about the 2013 library programs and their reach to the public.  There are 21,465 cardholders with door counts of 356,208, a 12% increase.  47 volunteers contributed 2,813 volunteer hours.   Check out totals for the library were over 900,000 print, non-print, and online items.  The website also increased to over 531,000 webpage views for the year, an increase of 22%.  In addition to library circulation they host programs including Writers Helping Writers, Genealogy, Book Discussions, and Hoosier Gardening.  

Catherine Riley, Youth Services Manager and Bambi Pea, Sr. Children’s Library Assistant talked about the children’s programs including Summer Reading, Winter Reading, Tumble Books, and Early Literacy.  The Early Literacy program includes the 5  skills that should be developed in the first 5 years if a childs life of talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing.  The library has a list of the 100 books every child should hear before kindergarten.
