Heartbeats Festival





Linda Garrity, the Community Education Coordinator from Hancock Regional Hospital told Kiwanis about the education programs and the upcoming Heartbeats Festival, “Spring Into Health”, Saturday, April 26 at the hospital.  

The Education division facilitates classes in CPR, smoking cessation, childbirth, and the AARP driving refreshers classes.  The division also hosts support groups including grief support, young mothers and babies, and Alzheimer’s.

The Heartbeats festival is a health fair providing free and low cost lab screenings, performed on a first come first served basis.  Free vendor screenings include vision, hearing, blood pressure, and blood glucose.  Labs screenings include Chemistry Profile, Hemoglobin A1C, hsC Reactive Protein, Homocystine, Prostate Specific Antigen, and Thyroid Simulating Hormone.  Diagnostic Imaging Screening require an appointment.  The imaging screenings performed are Arterial Evaluation, Cardiac Score, Lung Screen, and Bone Density.  For further information see www.hancockgional.org  or call 468-4600 for information and to make appointments.

Kiwanis and HC Library helping children

Barbara Roark, Bambi Pea, and Catherine Riley from Hancock County Public Library told Kiwanis about the library and it’s shared mission with Kiwanis of helping children. 
 
Barbara Roark, the Assistant Director, told Kiwanis about the 2013 library programs and their reach to the public.  There are 21,465 cardholders with door counts of 356,208, a 12% increase.  47 volunteers contributed 2,813 volunteer hours.   Check out totals for the library were over 900,000 print, non-print, and online items.  The website also increased to over 531,000 webpage views for the year, an increase of 22%.  In addition to library circulation they host programs including Writers Helping Writers, Genealogy, Book Discussions, and Hoosier Gardening.  

Catherine Riley, Youth Services Manager and Bambi Pea, Sr. Children’s Library Assistant talked about the children’s programs including Summer Reading, Winter Reading, Tumble Books, and Early Literacy.  The Early Literacy program includes the 5  skills that should be developed in the first 5 years if a childs life of talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing.  The library has a list of the 100 books every child should hear before kindergarten.

Kiwanis Dinner Dance and Music night at the Greenfield Creative Arts Center will be Saturday, May 17 .  Cocktails (cash bar) begin at 6:30, dinner at 7:30, and music by Tom Young with dancing following dinner.   The cost is $40 per person.  The number of tickets will be limited,  Tickets will be available at club on Tuesday, March 25.

Hancock Wellness Center




Ciara Nienhaus, Monica Holden and Kellie McBride of Hancock Wellness Center informed Kiwanis about the Center’s programs and membership.  The center, a part of the Hancock Regional Hospital, recently achieved certification by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA), making it the only certified medical fitness center in central Indiana, and one of only 30 in the entire nation.  The center features a full line of new Technogym strength and cardio fitness equipment, certified staff, a lap swimming pool, full-court basketball, clinically-integrated programs, and a variety of fitness classes.

As a medical fitness facility non-member services include 60 day cardiac and 60 day diabetes programs.  The Arthritis Foundation program is also available that can include Tai Chi and water exercise.

Members of the fitness center have daily access to all of the programs and equipment as well as the numerous classes the center holds.  Classes include cycling, pilates, body sculpting, Zumba, yoga, kickboxing, and aquatics classes.

Children's Theater

Pam Johnson accepts the Kiwanis contribution for Hancock County Children's Theater from Susie Boome.

Pam Johnson, told Kiwanis about Hancock County Children's Theater.    The theater which serves the four school systems in Hancock County has been in existence since 1987.  Pam Johnson has been Director of the theater since 1996 and served as Musical director from 1992 -1996. 
125 to 150 children participate each year along with adult volunteers and alumni workers.  Nearly 1500 people attend the June performances.   The children perform, build sets, design programs and  shirts,  and design the publicity posters. 

The cost of $150 per student is covered primarily through donations from organizations and individuals and ticket sales.  A small fee is charged to each student.  Kiwanis presented Johnson with a check to help with the 2014 production.  Kiwanis has been a contributor since 2003.  Anyone interested in contributing can send contributions to Hancock County Children's Theater. c/o Pam Johnson, 1440 North Franklin, Greenfield, Indiana 46140.

Busy Night at Kiwanis

Greenfield Kiwanis was visited by the Rose Division Lt. Governor, Sue Otte; Meals on Wheels directors, Kathleen Vahle and Jennifer Presser; and heard reports Kiwanis programs for Visually Impaired Preschool Services, Project Eliminate, Moon rover Challenge, and Easter Carrots.
Meals on Meals on Wheels of Hancock County, Inc. is an independently funded 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help the citizens of Hancock County maintain an independent lifestyle through the delivery of nutritious meals in accordance with prescribed dietary needs and provide a point of personal contact with the community.
Meals on Wheels of Hancock County provide two home delivered meals each weekday to Hancock County residents who have difficulty cooking or shopping for themselves.  Each meal is hand packed to the client's physician's specifications as well as the client's personal preferences.  Meals are delivered throughout Hancock County by friendly volunteers, providing a daily wellness check for each client.
 
Meals on Wheels of Hancock County, Inc. does not receive federal or state funding, therefore we rely on client payment, individual, group and corporate donations, as well as grants and various fund raising events in order to provide this service.  As part of their fund raising they will hold their 5th Annual Sumptuous Settings, Saturday, April 26th, 2014 @ 5:30pm at Indiana Grand Casino.  For more information see http://www.mealsonwheelsonline.org/
 
Susie Billings, President; Becky Riley, President-Elect; and Donna Owens, Secretary attended the Indiana District Mid-Year Kiwanis meeting in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 22.  Becky Riley reported on the Kiwanis sponsored program, Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) serves children who are blind, visually impaired, or multiply disabled, and who are under the age of three years, through the First Steps program in Kentucky and Indiana. Donna Owen, reported on The Eliminate Project.  With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.  As of February 16, 2014, the Kiwanis family has raised more than US$2.59 million for The Eliminate Project, which will save or protect more than 1.4 million women and their future babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus.  For more information see http://www.kiwanis.org/ .
